Individuals Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Medications Regain Pounds Far More Rapidly Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

New research indicates that patients who stop using new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on lost weight far faster than those who halt traditional lifestyle programs.

Published data in a leading medical journal points out that while obese people often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"People using such treatments need to be cognizant of the danger of quick weight regain when the medication concludes," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery implies a return to starting weight in about a year and a half.

Analyzing Approaches

The research, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.

The team point out that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise generally experience a slower creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Understanding the Quick Regain

Nutrition scientists propose the mechanism of the jabs accounts for the accelerated weight return.

These medications imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal might result in the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."

A Chronic Condition?

The NHS suggest the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals say that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the treatment might need to be life-long.

This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "highlight the chronic character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Testimonies

Individuals who have stopped the medication describe a intense resurgence of cravings.

"I experienced a switch activating and you become extremely hungry," said a patient.

The struggle is compounded if individuals have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Significant Interest

Survey data suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest remaining high.

  • Adoption is higher among females than males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and lasting health benefits relies on combined behavioural changes.
